Great Discoveries and Improvements
Invariably Involve The Cooperation Of Many Minds.
- Alexander Graham Bell
During these tough economic times, it is easy to panic and get caught up in doom's day rhetoric. However, that would be such an un-American thing to do. Historically, in the darkest of hours, it is the American way to unite, rise to the occasion and illuminate an otherwise gloomy situation.
Let us recall the Mothers March Against Polio. In the heart of the Great Depression and running through periods of rationing during World War II, this group of ladies collected four billion dimes going door to door across America. To this day, we are benefiting from this monumental act of generosity.
We can also remember the Chicago citizens who launched Provident Hospital during a catastrophic 1893 banking crisis. The Union Pacific Railroad, the Santa Fe Railroad and several hundred banks all went bust and unemployment was at 17%. A group of black citizens started a hospital with their own money because of other hospitals' unwillingness to serve black patients or train black nurses. Eventually major support was secured from wealthy white patrons as well. Provident Hospital went on to become the site of the first open heart surgery and continues to serve Chicago citizens today.
It wasn't too long ago when America banded together during the horrific events of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Giving what they could, be it blood, money or sweat, citizens nationwide did their part to help their fellow countrymen.
As members of the nonprofit community, we answered the call to action to serve our neighbors, to strengthen our community and to enrich our society. We knew that we didn't have an easy road ahead of us, but we were resolved to stand up to the challenge. Through creativity, relationship building, and a can-do spirit, our networks turned into volunteers, donors and organizations. What we must remember now is that we can continue to build in partnership with other organizations. Just as others citizens have done before, we can band together to weather this economic storm. We can unite strengths, resources and ideas. More than ever, with the advances of modern technology, we can build a network of people empowering people. And finally, we do not have to fear the unknown because we have each other.
